LAKELAND, FL – A female passenger died on Tuesday when a driver fell asleep and crashed his car into another vehicle on a roadway in western Polk County, reports Fox 13 Tampa Bay.
Police say the incident happened just after 6 a.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 4 near County Line Road.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of a Lexus sedan fell asleep while travelling east on the interstate. After losing control, the vehicle crashed into the back of a Dodge pickup truck in the center lane. The Lexus then collided with a concrete embankment after rotating in the roadway.
An unrestrained passenger from the Lexus died in the accident. Authorities have not yet released her name or age to the public.
The driver of the Lexus and two other passengers sustained mild injuries. An additional teen passenger was not hurt in the crash.
The 48-year-old driver of the pickup truck did not sustain injuries in the collision.
A full investigation of the incident is underway.
