HAINES CITY, FL – Two police officers sustained injuries in a car accident that happened while they were pursuing a suspect in Haines City on Saturday, reports Bay News 9.
Police say the incident happened just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of East Johnson Avenue and Power Line Road.
The investigation thus far suggests that Haines City Police Officers Jose Ramirez and Gedrick Vargas were pursuing 19-year-old Robert Lee Smith after Smith had pointed a rifle at them during a routine traffic stop. During the chase, another vehicle collided with the police cruiser.
Medics transported both officers to the hospital with injuries. Officer Vargas suffered a a broken rib and a dislocated shoulder. After an overnight stay, Vargas was released from the hospital on Sunday.
Officer Ramirez sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the ICU for a brain bleed, a broken arm, and injuries to the face.
It is unclear if the occupants of the other vehicle sustained injuries in the crash.
Robert Lee Smith has been arrested and faces charges of drug possession and aggravated assault.
