Pickup vs. tow-truck collision kills 1 in Lakeland

LAKELAND, FL – An elderly man died Wednesday morning after his pickup truck crashed into the side of a tow truck on a roadway in northwest Lakeland, reports The Ledger.

Police say the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. in the area of 2915 Swindell Road, which is the address for Lakeland Wrecker.

The investigation thus far indicates that an eastbound 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck crashed into the passenger side of a tow truck as the latter vehicle was backing out of the Lakeland Wrecker property. Authorities say the lights and backing tone on the tow truck were active at the time of the collision.

The 72-year-old driver of the pickup truck, identified as Glen Gilbreath died after transport to a local hospital. Gilbreath was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Shane Wiseman, the 48-year-old tow truck driver, suffered only minor injuries in the accident.

A full investigation is underway.
