News: Wrong-way DUI crash kills 1 in Polk Co.

LAKE WALES, FL – A wrong-way collision caused by a drunk driver killed one person early Sunday morning on a highway in Lake Wales, WFLA News Channel 8 reports.

Police say the incident happened around 3:20 a.m. when 39-year-old Mark Anthony Poe drove his truck the wrong way on the eastbound side of State Route 60, also known as Hesperides Road. Poe’s vehicle collided head-on with a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta near Stokes Road.

The driver of the Volkswagen sustained fatal injuries. It is unclear if Poe or any of this three passengers were hurt in the crash.

Authorities arrested Poe on a charge of vehicular homicide after finding alcohol in and near the vehicle. Police also observed that Poe’s speech was slurred, and he smelled of alcohol.

A full investigation of the incident is underway.
