News: Woman killed in crash with drunk driver on I-75 in Tampa

TAMPA, FL – A woman was killed last Thursday when a drunk driver struck her vehicle on I-75 in northeast Tampa, WFLA reports.

The> fatal incident happened in the northbound lanes near Fletcher Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. on May 3.

Police say that Michael Troy Jones, 31, attempted to speed past a Chevrolet Cruz and instead collided with it. The Cruz spun out into the median and hit a tree, while Jones’s Honda Accord ran onto the shoulder and struck a pole. One of the vehicles also hit a Toyota Corolla, although the exact circumstances are unclear.

A 25-year-old female passenger in the Cruz died at the scene, while its 25-year-old male driver was hospitalized in serious condition.

Jones and a passenger both sustained minor injuries, as did the driver and a passenger in the Corolla.

Police booked Jones, who has been charged with DUI manslaughter and DUI with serious injury.
