LAKELAND, FL – An SUV driver fled the scene of a crash that killed a 46-year-old motorcyclist on a busy road in Lakeland on Friday night, Fox 13 Tampa Bay reports.
Police say the incident happened around 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Doris Drive and South Florida Avenue.
The driver of a Toyota Highlander turned left from Doris Drive onto South Florida Avenue and crashed into a Suzuki motorcycle.
The motorcyclist died after transport to Lakeland Regional Health.
The driver of the Toyota SUV exited his vehicle and ran away from the scene. Police arrested the suspect when he returned to the scene approximately 30 minutes later. Authorities have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Michael Angelo Diaz.
Law enforcement charged Diaz with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
