LAKELAND, FL – A 20-year-old man died Sunday morning, and another person suffered serious injuries after an SUV crashed along a busy roadway in Lakeland, reports WESH 2.
Police say the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Memorial Boulevard near the access ramp to I-4.
The preliminary investigation suggests that a westbound Ford Expedition ran over a grass median into the eastbound lanes of Memorial Boulevard and collided with a concrete barrier. The vehicle overturned multiple times, and the force of the collision threw the driver from the SUV.
The driver died at the scene of the accident. Authorities identified him as Jeison Gutierrez of Plant City.
Medics transported a 31-year-old passenger to the hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to recover.
Law enforcement says speed was likely a factor in the accident. A full investigation is underway.
