News: 11-year-old cyclist struck, killed in Palm Harbor

PALM HARBOR, FL – An 11-year-old boy died Sunday evening after being hit by a pickup truck on a sidewalk in northwest Pinellas County, reports 10 Tampa Bay.

Police say the incident happened at 5:30 p.m. on a sidewalk adjacent to the northbound side of US-19, south of Grand Cypress Boulevard.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of a northbound pickup truck towing a boat trailer veered off of the highway to avoid colliding with traffic that had slowed ahead of him. The driver ran onto the nearby sidewalk and collided with the young cyclist.

Medics transported the 11-year-old boy to a local hospital. He died sometime after arrival from injuries sustained in the wreck.

It is unclear at this time if the 21-year-old driver of the pickup truck faces charges.

The incident is under investigation.
