News: 1 hospitalized in 3-vehicle Polk Co. crash on I-4

LAKELAND, FL – The driver of an 18-wheeler went to the hospital with serious injuries on Sunday after a multi-vehicle accident in Lakeland, reports Fox 13 Tampa Bay.

Police say the incident happened around 7:45 a.m. on the westbound side of I-4.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a westbound semi-truck driver rear-ended a stopped truck tractor on the interstate. The impact caused the truck tractor to strike a pick-up truck.

Police say the initial crash happened because the semi-truck driver did not notice slowed traffic in the roadway and was unable to stop his vehicle in time.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, identified as a 32-year-old North Carolina man, sustained serious injuries.

The other two drivers were unhurt in the accident.

A full investigation is underway.
