Hit-and-run collision injures child at Poinciana intersection

POINCIANA, FL – A hit-and-run collision sent an 11-year-old child to the hospital in northeastern Polk County on Tuesday morning, reports WFLA News 8.

Police say the incident happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Rio Grande Canyon Loop and Cedarfield Drive on the Polk County side of Poinciana.

The full circumstances of the crash are unclear, but authorities say a dark-colored Toyota 4-Runner struck the child in the roadway before fleeing the scene.

The driver later confessed to the incident, at which point officials charged the 66-year-old man with two felonies, including leaving the scene of the crash and tampering with evidence.

The victim is expected to recover.
