DUI crash in Plant City kills 1 child, hurts another

PLANT CITY, FL – One child died and another was critically hurt after a pickup crashed along a roadway in northeast Hillsborough County on September 13th, Tampa Bay Times reports.

Police say the incident happened just before 10 p.m. on Joe McIntosh Road, which is just east of Paul Buchman Highway.

The investigation thus far indicates that 24-year-old Kolby Lassiter was driving his Ford F-250 east while intoxicated with two unrestrained child passengers. Lassiter lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway before crashing through a fence. The vehicle overturned, at which point the children appear to have been ejected.

One child died at the scene. Medics airlifted the other to Tampa General Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Lassister also sustained serious injuries, for which he was taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.

Authorities arrested Lassister this past Friday on several charges, including DUI manslaughter and aggravated manslaughter of a child.
