Driver killed after crashing Jeep into Polk Co. pond

LAKE ALFRED, FL – A 47-year-old man from Winter Haven died after driving his Jeep into a pond in Lake Alfred early Sunday morning, reports WFLA News 8.

Police say the incident happened just before 1 a.m. at a pond near the intersection of Shinn Boulevard and East Thelma Street.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the driver lost control of his vehicle along a curve in the road, at which point he ran off of the roadway, crashed through a fence, and landed in the pond.

Deputies attempted to rescue the driver from his fully submerged vehicle, but the man died at the scene of the accident.

Authorities identified the driver of the Jeep as Jesus Campos.

A full investigation of the incident is underway.
