2-vehicle crash kills woman, hurts child in west Polk Co.

LAKELAND, FL – A 71-year-old woman died, and a child went to the hospital after two cars collided on a state road in Lakeland on Saturday morning, reports WFLA News 8.

Police say the incident happened around 11:40 a.m. on FL-659 near Grimes Road, which is just south of the Ten Rocks Mobile Home Park.

The investigation thus far indicates that a northbound 2021 Ford Escape veered into the southbound lane to avoid hitting a car that had stopped in front of her to turn. The SUV collided with a southbound 2015 Freightliner truck.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 71-year-old Judy Pate, died at the scene of the crash.

An 8-year-old passenger from the SUV went to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

The truck driver did not sustain injuries in the crash.

A full investigation is underway.
