2-vehicle crash involving scooter kills child in Tampa

TAMPA, FL – A 37-year-old Tampa man faces DUI manslaughter charges after a scooter crash killed his 10-year-old son on Thursday night, reports 10 Tampa Bay.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. on West Hillsborough Avenue near North Himes Avenue, which is just north of Al Lopez Park.

The investigation indicates that Yordanis Leyva lost control of his scooter while turning into a gas station, at which point the scooter fell into oncoming traffic. A car ran over Leyva and his son, who was a passenger on the scooter.

Medics transported Leyva and his son to a local hospital, where his son was pronounced dead. Leyva sustained serious injuries.

A full investigation is underway.
