More Than 20% Of Florida Drivers Are Uninsured. What Does That Mean For You?
You are driving down the road, following all the proper road rules, and BAM! You are hit by another driver! Now imagine that the at-fault driver is uninsured. Now you are left paying for all the damages and expenses, but how will you cover everything?
Your gut reaction is to assume your insurance policy will cover it because, after all, that seems like the most practical reason to have auto insurance, right? But unless you have uninsured motorist coverage, you may be out of luck.
Our attorneys at Mickey Keenan P.A. explain why uninsured motorist coverage is so important and what can happen if you don’t have it.
Uninsured Motorists in Florida
More than one in five drivers in Florida are driving without insurance. This means that if you are in an auto accident, you have a 20% chance of being hit by a driver with NO insurance coverage. Those are startling numbers! Are you willing to gamble those odds?
Florida is the 6 the worst state for the number of uninsured motorists on the road. The average for annual insurance in Florida is 36% higher than the national average, costing each insured Floridian around $1,900 a year.
On top of paying a higher premium for insurance, Florida auto insurance policyholders have the option to choose whether they want to add additional coverage to their plan—uninsured motorist coverage.

What Is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
Uninsured motorist coverage protects the policyholder when they are in an auto accident with an at-fault driver who carries no liability insurance. The coverage can also kick in when the at-fault driver has reached their liability limits but there are still financial expenses that need covering, such as property damage or medical bills.
Florida requires that all drivers carry a $10,000 minimum requirement of personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage liability. But more than 20% of Floridians choose not to have insurance, so uninsured motorist coverage can financially cover the auto accident damages and expenses when the driver who was not at fault carries this coverage.
Remember that Florida is also a“no-fault” state, so there are times when an accident results in damages that PIP and property damage liability do not cover; uninsured motorist coverage will fill in financially.

What Does Uninsured Motorist Coverage Cover?
Uninsured motorist insurance coverage is NOT required in Florida. Although Florida law does require that all insurance companies offer uninsured coverage, it is up to the policyholder if they choose to reject this coverage or add it on.
Adding on uninsured motorist coverage is an additional expense that is often rejected so the policyholder can save money…but it shouldn’t be! If you are hit by an uninsured driver without this coverage, you will be responsible for all out-of-pocket damages and expenses. These can include lost wages, medical expenses for all drivers and passengers and the at-fault driver, and car repairs. What a financial nightmare!
